One Item, Seven Ways: The Denim Dress

So often, women buy a trendy piece of clothing -- such as this year's must-have denim dress -- and wear it the same way every time it leaves their closet. I'm here to help gently break you of that habit, and help you get more out of your fashion purchase. Trust me, it's fun and useful to learn how to create the effect of having a larger wardrobe than you actually do, just by learning how to match up accessories and already-in-your-closet basics in different ways.

Here, I bring you my favorite ways to wear a go-to denim dress. You'll find ideas for creating create multiple outfits with one dress, that work for all your events from casual days to the office and even date night out.

Wear Your Denim Dress With Trendy Add-Ons

A sleeveless denim dress makes a great base for building a look that reflects your personality. Start with a simple denim sheath, such as this light-weight denim dress by fashion retailer Topshop. Grab a leopard clutch for an instant dose of fierce style, and back that up with leg-elongating high heel sandals in a metallic shade such as gold or bronze. A summery straw fedora keeps this look whimsical for carefree summer days.

Lose the hat and swipe on some bold lipstick, and you're instantly ready for date night out.

Wear Your Denim Dress Over a Striped Shirt

Layering your denim dress over Parisian stripes is a confident fashion move that adds uptown chic to your ensemble. For a short-over-long outfit that's perfect for cooler days, wear a long-sleeved, black-and-white striped shirt under a short-sleeved (or sleeveless) denim dress. Maintain the fashion-forward vibe by adding accessories in monotone shades. I would style this outfit with classic black pumps, multiple silver chains and a graphic purse design.

Wear Your Denim Dress With Black Accents

A medium-wash denim dress is anything but casual when you add fiercely fashionable accessories in shades of black. Starting with this artfully-distressed, House of Holland denim dress, I added glamorous over-sized, black sunglasses, a quilted, lady-like clutch bag with a (detachable) gold chain strap, and strappy, high heel sandals with black as their base color. To break up the color pattern and add a touch of bling, a gold bracelet (that picks up on the gold chain detail of the purse) is a stylish finishing touch.

Wear Your Denim Dress With a Feminine Blazer

Want a denim-day outfit you can wear to the office, without sacrificing your reputation as a style star? Here's how to wear denim to the office on casual Fridays and look like a boss. Start with a simple denim dress in a dark wash, such as this Topshop dress in indigo. Add a pink blazer in a soft, draped silhouette that looks anything but masculine, and protects you against office air conditioning.

Complete your look with quality accessories in warm shades, such as a gold cuff bracelet and low platform sandals.

Wear Your Denim Dress With Boyfriend Layers

Don't put away your denim dresses when the weather cools -- transition them into fall and winter by learning to layer with warmer pieces from your wardrobe. For instance, I love layering a sleeveless denim dress, such as this MiH Protest style, over a crisp, white button-down inspired by a man's closet. Add a long, boyfriend caridgan in dove grey on top for extra warmth, and wear black tights if needed to protect against the chill.

Finish your look with tall, grey boots with a heel, and a chunky men's-style watch in gold or silver.

APC's wrap-style denim dress with a tie belt is a great workday staple for denim-friendly offices. Make your outfit pop with cheerful accessories that create a fashionable, color blocking effect. If you're shy, start with items in shades of blue, from moody indigo (as in the sunglass lenses pictured here) to the fun of a bright cobalt leather clutch. Look-at-me pumps in a primary color let your co-workers know you're confident enough to work it.

Want to save this upbeat look for weekends? Swap out the high heels for a pair of wedge sandals and wear it to brunch, antiquing, or a drive through the countryside.

Are you a little bit country? A short-sleeved denim dress, such as this styish number by Stella McCartney, is the perfect base for creating a Western-inspired look, which many fashion observers are predicting will be one of the key trends for fall and winter this year. Start by cinching your waist over the dress with a braided, brown leather belt. A fringed, brown leather purse worn cross-body is a stylish way to carry your must-have items.

Instead of the obvious cowboy boots, a more stylish option is a cognac-colored ankle boot with lace-up detailing. Librarian-chic, tortoise-shell glasses (with clear lenses, if you don't need a prescription) are another, smart way to keep this look distinctly modern.
