How to Make Tomato Cages From Coat Hangers
- 1). Use pliers to unwind the top of three hangers. Straighten the three hangers with your pliers as much as possible.
- 2). Stick the three hangers in the ground around your tomato plant so that they form a triangle. If your tomato plant is already large, place the hangers in an area where nothing is growing until you are done.
- 3). Pull a hanger out of shape with your hands to form a square. Twist the top, twisted part of the hanger around one of the flat edges of your square with the pliers so that no rough edges are sticking out. Repeat the process with more hangers until you have four squares.
- 4). Slide your first square hanger down the three poles sticking out of the ground until it is 4 inches from the ground. Use jewelry wire to wrap the three poles to the square at three corners.
- 5). Wrap the wire by making an "X" over each pole at the point where the square wire meets. Wrap it as tight as you can at least five times.
- 6). Cut the wire with your wire cutters and tuck the end into the "X."
- 7). Repeat the process for all three corners where the poles meet. Place and secure the other squares so that they are each 4 to 6 inches apart.
