Aloha! Celebrities Embrace the Palm Print Trend
Aloha! Celebrities Embrace the Palm Print Trend
These sunny summer days may invoke images of lapping ocean waves and palm trees, but for those who live far from such a topical locale, there’s a happy alternative to be had. Increasingly stars have been embracing the heat by wearing tropical designs, the most popular of which is currently the retro palm tree print. No kidding, palm trees are hot for summer, bucking their normcore beginnings as the go-to uniform for Hawaiian tourists and Tommy Bahama customers.
Just check out the many celebrities who’ve been dressing like an exotic getaway and embracing the same prickly print…
Carly Rae Jepsen
Way back in 2012, Carly Rae Jepsen was already ahead of the curve when she wore this Lisa Ho ivory blazer and shorts with palm tree print detail, Aldo heels, and the Kate Spade New York Tiki Bar cocktail clutch. At least she’s trying to dress more appropriate to her 27 year age, even if the shoes are a miss -- it’s clear that black doesn’t go with everything.
Bella Thorne
Be prepared to see a LOT of Fausto Puglisi over the next few slides because, his spring 2014 collection, has become a favorite among the celebrity elite. They simply cannot get enough of his palm tree silhouette, which here can be seen gracing the body of Bella Throne at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards, where she paired a two-tone mini with long sleeves top.
Lily Collins
Well, this is a little embarrassing because, at the same 2013 Teen Choice Awards, Lily Collins also donned the Fausto Puglisi spring 2014 design, only hers was in the form of a high-low hem skirt with a solid black top. What is it about the Teen Choice Awards and tropical prints, hmmm? Is it the surfboard shaped awards that have stars come over all tiki?
Natalia Borges
Model Natalia Borges literally looked like she’d strolled in from desert island at the 2013 amfAR Milano Gala Event, also opting for Fausto Puglisi’s now iconic print, but by way of a thigh-high cut maxi dress, black top and statement necklace.
Molly Sims
Model-turned-actress-turned-jewelry designer Molly Sims cut a statuesque figure while attending Diane Von Furstenberg's Journey of A Dress Exhibition Opening Celebration earlier this year. The January weather outside may have been biting, but in her black and orange print maxi, Sims looked like a sizzling heatwave. I can’t comment on the dress designer, but given the style and purpose of the event, I would stake my guess on DVF.
It’s only right.
Rashida Jones
Another January event sees yet more celebrities doing battle with old man winter. This time it’s Rashida Jones at the 2014 Golden Globe Awards, where the Parks and Rec actress wore a glittering Fausto Puglisi dress, Ana Khouri jewels and Brian Atwood shoes. Any prior reservations you may have had about wearing white after Labor Day should be banished in your mind because, here, Rashida looks like a one-way ticket to paradise.
Rita Ora
While posing for Elle UK’s May edition, Brit pop star Rita Ora may have gone topless on the cover, but at least she covered some of her modesty in this red and white palm print kimono by Fausto Puglisi. Accessorized with slicked back hair and her signature red pout, it was a stunning and understated turn for the usual glammed up singer.
Lena Dunham
Another celeb to try out the Fausto Puglisi palm print trend was Lena Dunham. While attending the 2014 Book Expo America this past May, the Girls star paired a palm-tree motif t-shirt with a mini skirt, which also featured gold and crystal-embroidery tropical motifs. I love how Lena rocks the A-line and, strangely enough, can also envision Hannah Horvath wearing the same ensemble. But don’t we all have problems differentiating between the actress and onscreen character?
Lupita Nyong’o
Jennifer Lopez always likes to bring a bit of tropical flavor to her stage performances and her first ever hometown concert to launch State Farm Neighborhood Sessions was no exception to that theme. Donning a custom-made Versus Versace green palm-print long-sleeved bodysuit with a matching tear-away skirt and gold accents, this outfit proved to be quite the throwback to a certain Grammy’s outfit JLo once made infamous. Amiright?!
Finally Lupita Nyong’o, not one to shy away from bright colors and fun designs, recently wore this bright blue Fausto Puglisi dress to the 2014 Maui Film Festival. Now I need to know, does Puglisi own some sort of trademark on palm trees? Either way, Lupita still looks divine as she shows off some serious stems in this little mini. Girl, sure knows how to do summer.
