Set a realistic weight-loss goal for yourself that you want to reach through your participation in sports. Use this goal as motivation to begin your sports regimen. Your doctor or nutritionist can help you structure a healthy weight loss program to follow, and websites such as WebMD and Mayo Clinic provide tools to determine healthy weights to attain, depending on factors such as your height and weight.

    • 2). Sign up for a league, team, or club that boasts the sport of your choice. Community gyms and park districts often have local teams for those who want to participate in organized sports, as well as personal coaches to improve your own game on an individual level. Sign up for a sport you think you will enjoy playing, not the sport you think will cause you to lose the most weight.

    • 3). Whatever sport you sign up for, make it an active sport requiring a level of physical exertion that will challenge you. For example, if you decide play golf, walk from hole to hole instead of taking a cart so that you can build your cardiovascular health and burn off extra calories.

    • 4). Make practice a regular part of your weekly schedule, not an optional addition to your life. Establishing your exercise as a routine is important for maintaining your weight even after you have reached your weight-loss goals.

    • 5). Practice your skills on your own in between official meetings with your team or coach to improve your personal performance. Independent practicing and conditioning will allow you to perform better at practice and during important games, and will help you burn off weight and calories even without your teammates or friends next to you.

    • 6). Get to know the other people in your fitness community, whether they are your teammates, your coach, or the people in other sports teams. Building a community of people to keep you accountable can help sustain your participation in sports and your motivation to lose weight.
