    • 1). Locate the spark plug connector that is on the motor. Pull on the rubber connector to unplug it from the spark plug.

    • 2). Find and remove the bolts that are used to secure the start cover with the socket wrench. Take the cover off and turn it over to expose the pulley.

    • 3). Turn the pulley counterclockwise until it stops. Secure the pulley with the locking pliers to clamp it in place and prevent it from moving.

    • 4). Locate the knot hole that is in the center of the pulley. Find the knot of rope and grasp onto it with the needle-nose pliers. Pull the rope out of the pulley.

    • 5). Apply a small flame to the end of the new starter rope. Burning the end of the rope slightly prevents it from fraying.

    • 6). Insert the end of the new starter rope into the hole that is on the starter cover. Insert the end of the rope into the hole in the pulley. Make sure the rope is seated over the pulley.

    • 7). Grasp the rope with the needle-nose pliers and pull out about 12 inches.

    • 8). Tie the end of the starter rope into a knot. Pull the rope out from the starter cover until the end with the knot is seated in the pulley hole.

    • 9). Release the locking pliers and allow the pulley to recoil the starter rope. Place the starter cover back on the machine and secure it with the bolts.
