Feeding Your Dog in a Recession

In current economic times, it can be difficult to make ends meet, let alone feed a dependent animal.
However, dog owners should not worry since there are ways you can save money without your beloved pup going hungry.
Firstly, certain scraps are good for your dog.
You should filter out those that are not good, such as fatty foods or potentially poisonous foods, but save meats and any adequate bones you might have.
These can offer all the proteins and nutrients a dog need in a meal.
They will also gladly eat vegetables and pastas as well.
Your table scraps can be gathered together from one meal and can make a full meal for a dog, which will save a lot of money.
While you can do this often enough, make sure he is getting a good balance in what you give him.
You cannot feed him bread alone for a week, as he will not be getting what his body needs.
It's important to remember where the domestic dog came from.
In the wild, dogs and wolves have always been scavengers and as such have lived off scrapes for hundreds of years.
You can also shop around.
Some stores vary in prices from one to the next, so you will want to find the most reasonable.
Usually the generic brands are the cheapest, and while these are adequate to feed from time to time, they don't always have all the right nutrients and some contain a large amount of water alone.
Others have certain chemicals in them due to the processing, which is not always good for your dog.
However, when money is tight, it is not going to kill your dog and does not have to be a permanent measure.
Other stores offer discount cards which can help you earn points or money to contribute to purchases.
You can use this for the dog food, which allows you to get your dog food for free that time! Also, if a store has an offer on, such as buy one get one free, or just a good discount, then try to stock up on it.
You will find that it lasts a long time and will save you money.
Without making your dog go hungry, you can reduce his food too.
If he is getting three or more meals a day, he will easily get by on two.
If you feed two or one, you can save by splitting half a tin of meat with some dry food or some scraps.
This makes the tin last twice as long, without cutting back on his food.
If you feed twice, then you can make one meal about 2 cups of dry food and one meal a tin of meat (depending on his size - a smaller dog will get by on much less than 2 cups).
Sometimes, certain animal charities or organizations offer assistance for food for your animals.
It is worth looking into and finding out if you are eligible, since one day when your financial situation is back on its feet, you can always donate some food to these organizations, so you are giving something back and helping others.
Tough times sometimes call for tough measures, but it does not mean that any member of your family should go hungry.
Following some of the methods above will help you to save money while feeding your pet a healthy and satisfying diet.
