How to Grow Poplar Trees to Sell

    • 1). Research the potential market for poplar trees in your area and evaluate the crop's profitability. Consult with local agriculture extension staff for suggestions about best hybrids for your area and for help determining best management practices for your location as well as expected yields, production costs and market value.

    • 2). Prepare the planting site. Choose a sunny location with rich, sandy-loamy soil that's neutral, or in the slightly acidic to neutral pH range of 5.5 to 7.5. Soil that's more acidic or alkaline can be unproductive or deadly. Add organic matter and cultivate deeply, to thoroughly mix amendments with soil.

    • 3). Establish a planting plan or grid, marking tree spacing with planting flags. Determine optimal spacing based on when you intend to harvest the poplars, because trees harvested "young" are planted much closer together. Plant trees that will grow at least 15 to 20 years about 15 to 20 feet apart in rows separated by the same distance.

    • 4). Plant poplars in mid-spring, after the danger of frost has passed. Push one end of each cutting into the soil, so that just one viable bud is above the soil's surface; buds below ground will sprout into the root system.

    • 5). Water immediately and deeply, to settle the soil and start root development. Make sure moist soil touches the cutting, to encourage root sprouting and growth. Irrigate regularly, especially during the first year, to establish strong and deep root systems. Lay down aboveground drip irrigation systems during the first year, if needed.

    • 6). Hoe regularly to control weeds, especially during the trees' early years when competition for nutrients and moisture can most damage trees or set back their development. As trees mature the shade they cast will slow or stop weed growth.
