How to Sew on the Navy Reverse American Flag Patch
- 1). Pin the patch in place. The reverse American flag patch should be straight and centered at the top of the sleeve near the shoulder seam. Use at least two quilting pins to keep the patch in place while you sew; quilting pins are longer than regular sewing pins and therefore long enough to go through the shirt material and thick patch twice.
- 2). Choose your thread. Use thread that matches the embroidery on the edge of the patch. A regular reverse American flag patch needs yellow thread; other uniform-specific (like camouflage) patches require green or brown thread.
- 3). Sew the patch. Place a metal thimble on the tip of the finger you use to push the needle through the fabric; the patch is thick and the needle's eye end is sharp enough to hurt you. Use a neat overhand stitch to sew around all four sides of the patch. Knot the thread when you're finished and cut the excess thread.
