Rain Barrel Rejuvenation

The rainy season is fast approaching, and it is time that we use our natural resources! A rain barrel would be a fabulous way to start.
By collecting the water running off of our roof, we could then provide our lawns and gardens with clean water.
Water is such a precious commodity in many areas that we must do our best to preserve what water we are blessed to have.
I know that there are many times when I groan thinking of it raining- AGAIN! Yet, it is time to turn that frown upside down.
Using the rainwater is a perfect solution! Rain barrels come in many sizes and varying designs.
There is one that is perfect for your family's needs and complimentary to the look of your house.
A rain barrel, very simply, is a system that collects and stores rainwater streaming from your roof.
Water that would typically be lost to runoff and/or diverted to storm drains is now kept to be used in watering the garden.
A typical rain barrel is created from the following: 55-gallon drum, a vinyl hose, PVC couplings, and a screen gate to keep debris out.
It is a simple and inexpensive product, which sits conveniently under your gutter down spout.
Did you know that 40% of your water bill during the summer is, on average, the watering from your garden? A rain barrel would be able to collect rainwater to be used when you need it: for example, to save money on your water bill or conserve water usage during times of drought.
The water that has been collected can be used to water the lawn and/or plants, wash the car, or to top off a swimming pool.
The rainwater is free of chlorine, lime and calcium.
A rain barrel will save most homeowners a whopping 1,300 gallons of water during the peak summer months.
This not only helps the environment, but it saves you money and overall energy, due to a decreased demand for tap water.
Harvesting rain water is easy for any gardener- experienced to beginner.
What is amazing is that one, tiny inch of rain fall on a 1,000 foot surface, could yield approximately 500 gallons of rain water.
Think of the money and energy we would save, not to mention the chemicals we would keep from entering our Earth!
