How to Get a One-Year-Old to Fall Asleep on His Own
- 1). Allow your baby to have daytime naps only in a well-lit area so that he doesn't get an excessive amount of sleep. This ensures that he is tired enough at night to fall asleep on his own.
- 2). Control the lighting in your child's room at night by ensuring that all windows are curtained and no light is coming through. Install a night-light.
- 3). Sleep a safe distance from your baby. Test various distances because some babies have separation anxiety when they sleep too far away from their parents, while others are hyperstimulated when they are too close to their parents, i.e. in the same room.
- 4). Eliminate noise as much as possible. For example, oil a squeaky crib and ensure that everyone in your home is quiet when it is baby's bedtime. If you live in a noisy neighborhood, try a sound machine to drown out outside noise that could disrupt baby's sleep.
- 5). Let your child fall asleep by herself by leaving the room even if she is crying. Place her gently in her crib, say "good night" and then leave. Though this may be hard for you to do, eventually she will stop crying and learn to fall asleep by herself.
