How to Grow Wheat Grass at Home
- 1). Consider a kit. Prior to embarking on the wheat grass journey it is advisable to look into purchasing a wheat grass growing kit. These usually contain all of the elements necessary to grow wheat grass in your home including wheat grass seeds, growing trays, soil, minerals and complete instructional booklets on how to grow wheat grass. If you choose to assemble these items and grow wheat grass on your own, follow the directions below.
- 2). Purchase the necessary products. The major components needed to grow wheat grass at home are wheat grass seeds, growing trays and soil. The seeds can be purchased at most health food stores and the trays and soil can be found at a basic nursery.
- 3). Soak the seeds. Rinse the seeds and then place them in a wide jar or bowl. Cover them with water and allow them to soak for 8 to 10 hours. Cover the jar or dish with a paper towel. After the seeds have soaked (they will absorb some water) strain them from the jar and allow them to dry completely.
- 4). Add soil and seeds to the tray. Place moist soil in the seed tray. Then spread the dried seeds evenly over the soil and add another ½ inch of soil.
- 5). Water and cover the tray. The wheat grass should be watered daily and the tray covered with moist newspaper or paper towel to retain moisture in the soil.
- 6). Remove the tray cover and allow sunlight. After several days the wheat grass should have grown a couple of inches and can now be exposed to indirect sunlight. Simply place the tray in an area of your home where the wheat grass can receive sunlight, but not direct light because this dries the soil. Remember to continue watering the wheat grass so that the soil stays moist.
- 7). Harvest the wheat grass. When the grass has grown to 6 inches or higher it is ready to harvest. Simply use scissors or a sharp knife to cut the wheat grass just above the soil. The wheat grass can be juiced or refrigerate it for storage.
