How to Make Your Own Terrarium Using Garden Accessories

A beautiful indoor garden in a glass terrarium looks great even in small spaces and can be the focal point of your home decor. Small steps like choosing the right garden planters, a good potting mix and some decorative garden accessories will help your indoor garden flourish. Here are some steps you can follow for gardening in a glass terrarium.

The first step is to determine if you want your indoor garden to have humidity-loving plants or plants that prefer drier conditions like cacti. For humid conditions, choose garden planters that come with a lid to capture the moisture and create the desirable setting. There are beautiful glass terrariums and stands that are ideal for such gardening and look great in small spaces. For creating a dry environment, top-open glass vessels like aquariums, broad vases and wide bottom bottles work great.

Creating layers inside the terrarium makes sure that the soil is well-drained so your indoor plants can thrive. Start with a layer of coarse sand or pebbles at the bottom for drainage. Add activated charcoal as the next layer to help keep the air inside the container fresh. This is extremely useful especially for containers with lids. A thin layer of sphagnum moss between the charcoal and the potting soil helps with proper drainage while keeping the potting soil in place.

A good potting soil mix is one of the garden accessories that are most important for your indoor garden. There are potting mixes available which are formulated specifically for glass terrariums and plant-specific potting mixes also work well. If you choose to create a desert theme indoors, selecting a potting mix which has more sand content will be ideal. The right soil provides the right medium for your garden to grow.

After these basic gardening steps, accessorize these garden planters with some interesting garden accessories. Finishing touches like accent rocks or beautiful rounded pebbles look great when placed beside your plants inside the terrarium. Opt for other miniature accents like a small statue, a garden bench, a bridge or other miniature accents to design a miniature world inside the terrarium.
