Fences for Yards & Gardens

    Types

    • There are many types of fences, ranging from wooden to chain-link. The experts at Plant Care recommend choosing a material for your fence that compliment your landscape and home design. Wooden fences could be made of cedar, pine, redwood or juniper. Brick, iron or cement could also be used. Metal fencing examples include four-foot high chain link or wire mesh.

    Purpose

    • Consider the purpose of your fence when choosing the material. If you are trying to keep animals such as deer and rabbits out of your garden, choose a tightly woven wire fence. If you desire privacy, you may want to construct a six-foot tall wooden or vinyl fence. A picket fence can be a nice decorative accent that can work well if you are also trying to keep small pets confined.

    Considerations

    • When planning a wooden fence, you should make sure it is constructed of treated lumber if possible. Plant Care also recommends using galvanized nails and wire, as these do not normally rust. You might want to paint or stain your fence with a oil-based product, then give it a coat of polyurethane to waterproof it.
