Training Partners - Choose Yours Carefully

Hello everyone and happy spring! I hope you're all finally enjoying the spring weather with some outdoor physical fitness activity. If you've been enjoying it with a fellow fitness enthusiast or training partner, even better! The camaraderie of exercising with a friend or companion can help motivate and encourage you to achieve your fitness goals. There have been quite a few famous partners in history who have achieved greatness due to a competitive and collaborative partner relationship. Lennon/McCartney and the Wright Brothers quickly come to mind for me. Each of these relationships prospered because the whole was greater than the individual parts. The same holds true for weightlifting and fitness training. You can make great progress with a competent and encouraging training partner. A training partner can help get you going when you're not quite feeling up to the task and help you fight through sticking points with strong words of encouragement. A good training partner knows which buttons to push to help you achieve your goals.

When choosing a training partner you should look for someone who has similar fitness goals to your own. Not identical but similar. It would be hard to integrate a partner's routine with yours if one partner has a goal of gaining mass while the others goal is to get cut or lose weight. That being said, even if your goals slightly differ, by using what each you know best about training you can find a harmony and competitive atmosphere that would be beneficial to both of you. Once you get used to each other you'll both learn to work as team and push yourselves further than you thought you could or if you trained individually.

Be aware that training partnerships like any other relationships can go sour at a moment's notice. If you're starting to see that your training partner's enthusiasm, goals, or attitude no longer gel with you own, it's time to move on. There is nothing that can ruin your workouts quicker than having a training partner who is no longer on the same page as you. When you see that, end it before you get pulled down too! So there you have it the pros and cons of training partners. They can be a great asset or if your not careful a drag on your workouts. Remember, choose your partner wisely, it can make a difference.
