    • 1). Open a new Word document by clicking "File," "New" and then selecting "Blank Document."

    • 2). Click the "View" tab at the top and select "Outline" in the Document Views group.

    • 3). Type the name of the first heading of the outline and press "Enter." Type the name of the next heading and press "Enter." Continue doing this until you have the headings you want included in the outline. As you add headings, it automatically puts them under each other. Next to each heading is a minus sign (-) on the left, which means you have not entered any subheadings. It changes to a plus (+) sign when you add the subheadings.

    • 4). Click the "minus (-)" sign next to each heading and type the name of the subheading you want. You can put as many subheadings under each heading as you want. Continue doing this until you have all of the subheadings you want in the outline.

    • 5). Move the headings around if you want to. You can do this by using the arrows in the Outline tools. Place the cursor within the heading you want to move and click the "Move Down" arrow or "Move Up" arrow to move the heading where you want. You can do this for each heading to easily organize the outline. The subheadings move along with the headings that you move.

    • 6). View all of the text in the headings or only certain heading levels. If you do not want to see the subheading text you can close it. Click the cursor on the line you want to be visible and select the "Collapse" button. If you want to see the information, put the cursor on the line again and select the "Expand" button.

    • 7). View the outline when it is completed by clicking the "View" tab and then click "Print Layout." Click "File," "Save" and name the outline to save it.
