How to Determine the Cost of Kitchen Cabinets
- 1). Measure the cabinet area. Include the length, height and depth of the cabinets. Use these measurements to draw a sketch of the kitchen, including the appliances, doors and other features in the room. Draw in the cabinets along with the measurements for reference.
- 2). Decide if you will use stock cabinets from the home improvement store or custom cabinets built for the space. Stock cabinets save money on the project, but the sizes can't be adjusted. Custom cabinets cost more but are built to fit the kitchen. Determining the price of custom cabinets is best done by the builder but can cost up to four times as much as stock cabinets.
- 3). Determine how many upper and lower cabinets are necessary for the kitchen area. Use the existing cabinetry as a guide.
- 4). Select the material used for the kitchen cabinets. The type of wood used affects the cost of the cabinets. The specific style of the cabinets also influences the cost. Research the cost differences at your local home improvement store. Use your estimates of the number of cabinets needed along with the prices at the home improvement store to calculate a rough estimate.
- 5). Determine if you want any extras such as glass fronts or specialty molding around the cabinets. Any specialty feature adds to the overall cost of the project.
- 6). Calculate how many door knobs, handles and pulls you need for the room. Select a style of handle, noting the price. Multiply the price times the number of knobs needed and add that number to the cabinet budget.
- 7). Determine if a contractor will install the cabinets for you. If you handle the installation yourself, you only need to calculate the material costs. If you plan to use a contractor, get estimates to determine the cost of labor to add to the total project budget.
- 8). Add together the costs of the actual cabinets, extra features, handles and labor to determine the total cost of the project.
