Facts About Silk Screening and Screen Printing Shirts
While it may seem that this type of printing is a modern invention, this idea is incorrect. Screen printing also known as silk screening was first developed in China in around 1000 AD. The printing method spread to Japan and other Asian countries. However, at this time, this type of printing was not used! It was introduced in Europe in the late 18th century. Again, it was used irregularly and most certainly at this time they did not consider that kind of printing.
Samuel Simon patented the screen printing process in 1907. Back then, it was used for creating designs on wall paper, linen, silk, and other fine quality fabrics.
Originally only used for industrial technology reasons, silk screening became popular with the general public after artists began to use the techniques in the 20th century. Artist Andy Warhol made the technique extremely popular with his artwork of Marilyn Monroe. Today, shirt printing is used for artistic and commercial reasons. It is used to print images on materials of many different types including posters, DVDs, paper metals and wood. Custom printing is very popular and is worn by people of all ages.
Screens are made of a finely woven fabric called mesh. This material is stretched over a frame of wood. Areas of the screen are blocked to form a stencil of the image to be printed. The screen is put on top of a material like paper and ink is placed on the screen and pressed down to dye the fabric in certain patterns. Today, the most often used method to pres the dye down on the fabric, especially when printing shirts, is the rotary method.
Silk screening is eco-friendly in that the screens can be re-used after cleaning, especially for printing shirts. If the screen is no longer being used for a particular print run, then the screen can be cleaned and used again or another printing job in the future.
