Pinch a Bowl for Your Goblet

For this pottery project you will want
  • one to three pounds of a mid-range or high-fire clay body that is easily worked on the wheel as well as hand building
  • food-safe glazes
  • throwing tools.

Begin by wedging the clay. Cut off a lump of the wedged clay that is roughly half the size of your fist, depending on how large you want the goblet to be. (Take into account that clay shrinks.)

Form the bowl of the goblet using the pinch method.

Smooth the interior completely, for food safety. You can leave the exterior craggy and with forming marks, as I have done with my example goblet bowl, or you can smooth it out as well.

Tip: Use a small cup to rest your goblet's bowl on after you've formed it to keep it from deforming when you put it down. I use plastic medicine cups for this purpose (as well as for holding small amounts of underglaze or slip).
