How to Build Desk Height Cabinets
- 1). Measure where the cabinet will go with a tape measure to find out the height, width (side where it will open) and depth you want it to be.
- 2). Cut out two pieces of board that are width-by-depth. These are the top and bottom.
- 3). Cut out two pieces that are as wide as the desired width, but 1 1/2 inches shorter than the height. These will serve as the back and front.
- 4). Cut the front piece in half down the length to make the two front doors.
- 5). Cut out two side pieces that are 1 1/2 inches shorter than the desired height and 1 1/2 inches narrower than the depth. These are the sides.
- 1). Attach the bottom edge of the back piece to the bottom piece with nails or screws, so that the back piece is setting on top of the bottom piece.
- 2). Attach the two side pieces to the bottom piece and back piece. The edges of the side pieces should line up with the back piece and should be setting on top of the bottom piece.
- 3). Set the top piece on top of the side and back pieces and screw down. When done, the top should overhang the sides by 1 1/2 inches and line up with the bottom.
- 4). Attach the hinges to the side pieces along the front edge. There will be two hinges on each side, one 1/2 inch from the top and one 1/2 inch from the bottom. Attach the hinges so that when the free arm is swung out, it swings to the outside of the cabinet.
- 5). Attach the doors. The simplest way to do this is to first tape the hinges to each door, one at a time, in the manner you expect to attach them, and opening and closing the door to test it. Once you have the hinge alignment determined, mark through the holes in the hinges where each screw will go. Take the door off and pre-drill holes for the hinge screws before attaching the door.
- 6). Attach the handles to the doors as desired.
- 7). Attach magnetic catches to the doors and inside of the cabinet.
