How to Teach Kids Investigation Skills

    • 1). Encourage your kids to ask questions. The first step in investigation is formulating a question. Formulate your own questions about the environment and things of interest to your child. Encourage your child to do the same. Play on your child's natural curiosity. For example, if your child is fascinated by the microwave, ask her how she thinks it works.

    • 2). Help your child find her own answers to her questions. Teach her how to conduct basic research. If she has a question about schoolwork, help her look it up in her book or encourage her to ask her teacher. If she wants to investigate reasons for natural phenomena, help her look up the answers in a book or online.

    • 3). Think through the question and the answer out loud. As we mature, we internalize our thought process, but kids need to hear how you work through a problem in order to mimic the procedure. Talk it out with your son and guide him through the process of coming to a conclusion.

    • 4). Encourage your daughter to repeat the process often. The more questions she asks, the more proficient she will become at answering them for herself.
