How to Add a Trellis as a Garden Feature

    • 1). Decide on the area to install a trellis. If you are planning to grow deciduous climbers over the whole of a house wall then wires may be a better choice than trellis but for a smaller more dramatic garden feature install a trellis.

    • 2). Choose the trellis. Trellis is available in many shapes and sizes, for example fan shaped, rectangular or square with an arched top edge. It is also possible to have trellis made to order to fit a particular area. Trellis may be permanently or semi-permanently fixed to walls and fences.

    • 3). Get ready to attach the trellis to the wall. Mark the position of the trellis on the wall. You will need battening level with the top and bottom of the trellis. If the trellis is over 4 ft high, have an extra batten across the wall, behind the middle of the trellis. Drill the holes that will take the horizontal battens and insert wooden or plastic wall plugs in the wall.

    • 4). Drill corresponding holes in the wooden batten spacers themselves and fix them to the wall. Drill and screw the trellis on to the battens, starting at the top. Use a spirit level to check that the trellis is horizontal.

    • 5). Continue fixing the trellis on to the supporting battens, checking that the level remains true. Make sure that the finished trellis is firmly attached to the battening, and that the whole structure is securely fixed to the wall.

    • 6). Plant climbers. The grid pattern of a trellis is perfectly spaced, with the bars not too far apart, so that all kinds of climbers are encouraged to reach upwards without vast amounts weaving needed.
