    • 1). Draw one-half of the pliers on one 1-by-2-by-6-inch walnut board, using a pencil. Draw a top view and a side view. Remember that the portion of the pliers where the two halves meet must be narrower than the handles and gripping portions so that the gripping portions line-up. Draw the opposite half of the pliers on another 1-by-2-by-6-inch walnut board.

    • 2). Use a band saw to cut out the top views of the pliers from both boards. Carve out the side views of the pliers with a carving knife. Continue carving the overall shape of the pliers with the carving knife until the handles are rounded and the portion where the pliers meet is narrow enough so that the gripping portion lines up correctly.

    • 3). Carve the gripping section of the pliers with a carving knife. Use a cross-hatched pattern so the pliers have a gripping surface. Make the cuts 1/32- to 1/16-inch deep for the cross-hatching.

    • 4). Place the pliers halves together so that they are aligned correctly. Drill through the portion where they are designed to pivot, using a 1/4-inch drill bit and drill. Sand the pliers using fine-grit sandpaper. Apply a wood finish of your choice. Allow the finish to dry according to the instructions provided with the wood finish.

    • 5). Place the pliers together so that the holes line up. Insert the bolt through one of the washers. Push the bolt through the holes in the pliers. Place a washer onto the other end of the bolt. Thread the nut onto the bolt. Tighten the nut by hand so that the pliers operate smoothly.
