How to Replace an Anode Rod in a Hot Water Heater
- 1). Turn off the water supply to the hot water heater. Turn off the gas. Flip your breaker or remove your fuse from the main electric supply. Be sure to do all 3 of these. It is very dangerous and potentially life threatening if you do not take these necessary precautions.
- 2). Place a hose such as a garden hose on the hot water heater drain. Drain off about ½ of the water in the tank.
- 3). Find the hexagon shaped fitting which is located on the top of your hot water heater. You will need a ratchet wrench. With the ratchet wrench loosen the fitting and take out the anode rod.
- 4). Put the new anode rod in the hot water heater tank. Be sure to use Teflon tape on the threads so it can seal tightly. Tighten the hexagon fitting with a ratchet wrench.
