How to Design Your Own Anniversary Ring
- 1). Consider the significance. Think about why you are choosing to mark this specific anniversary with a special gift. Is it a milestone, such as your 25th anniversary? Have you just weathered your most challenging year together? Are you making up for past regrets, such as not being able to afford the rings you really wanted when you were first together? Considering the significance of this particular anniversary will help you choose a design that's worthy of it.
- 2). Think conceptually. What do you want the design to signify? Eternity? Completeness? Everlasting devotion? These are broad concepts, to be sure, but they can guide your design in fundamental ways. For example, to express how he and his beloved completed each other, one designer chose a puzzle-like design. The two rings were lovely when worn separately, but when put together, they formed a beautiful new entity, just like the couple themselves.
- 3). Choose your materials. According to custom, certain gems and metals represent certain anniversary years. If you're a traditionalist, you may want to let this guide your design. (See Resources) Many conventional jewelry stores can help design your own ring using traditional materials. On the other hand, if you tend to buck the trend, you may prefer more unusual materials and techniques. If that's the case, prepare to work with an independent designer or crafts person instead of a conventional jeweler.
- 4). Choose a jeweler. Many jewelry stores, both online and in the neighborhood, can help you design your anniversary ring. So can many independent designers and crafts people. (See Resources) The person you choose will depend on a number of factors, including reputation, cost, and compatibility. Whichever route you choose, make sure to do your homework, just like you would for any other service provider. Get at least three estimates, see samples of their work, and check references.
