A Disturbing Cause of a Dog Attack

Considering the possible reasons for dogs attacking people, one very disturbing cause is physical abuse.
A dog who has been physically abused will react one of 3 ways: 1.
He will cower from people, staying out of reach and maybe even urinating in submission and fear.
2.
He will return to the abuser with submissive body language hoping for positive attention and because he loves him and hopes that this time will be different.
3.
He will turn aggressive and become a danger to anyone who tries to get near him.
This is one of the most dangerous types of aggression, brought on by cruelty.
This is a dog who cannot be trusted, one who is filled with so much anger and hate that he will not accept kindness from anyone.
This is a dog who might not stop with one bite but continue attacking until his victim is dead.
It is rare, but it has happened.
Such an aggressive dog will usually be euthanized.
Obviously, it isn't the dog's fault that he feels he has to protect himself from everyone, that he needs to attack first before the "human threat" attacks him.
It is a sad fact of life that some people view animals as objects to release their own anger on.
People are the cause of dog aggression unless there is a physical reason such as a brain tumor or chemical imbalance.
Dog owners are the ones who should be held responsible for a vicious dog attack on a person.
If the dog has to be put down, the owner should have to go to jail.
It is difficult to protect yourself from a full flung attack such as by an abused dog.
The most important thing to remember is to never run from an attacking dog.
Always carry some form of protection when out walking either alone or with your dog because you never know when a dog might get out of its yard or off of its chain, chaining being another cause of dog aggression.
Canine pepper sprays are very effective in stopping an approaching dog who is viewed as a potential danger.
Another very effective weapon is a telescopic stun baton, which extends out to 21".
If any part of the extension touches the dog, it will send 800,000 volts of electricity into its muscles, stopping it in its tracks.
The effects will not last and will not leave any harmful consequences but will give you enough time to get away and call Animal Control.
It is truly unfortunate that man's best friend is treated so cruelly by some as to turn him against the very ones who were meant to protect, shelter and love him, turning him into man's worst enemy.
These people need serious professional help, but meanwhile, the dog suffers.
Always report any animal abuse you witness, whether it is by an owner of the animal or not, so that hopefully an intervention can occur before the dog suffers irreversible damage.
If, God forbid, you are ever approached by a vicious dog with the intent on attacking you, try to stay calm, have a weapon ready to use to protect yourself, but also keep in mind that the dog isn't attacking because he wants to, but rather because he has been programmed that people are enemies - the disturbing result of animal cruelty.
If you must take out your anger on anyone after a dog attack, let it be the owner of the dog.
Press charges and hope the owner faces the consequences to the full extent of the law.
Unfortunately the dog will probably pay with his life, but maybe someday the owners of such dogs will have to pay with jail time and receive professional therapy.
