Although drinking Kava tea is becoming more popular in the US, it will never be as popular as it is in its home of origin, the islands of the South Pacific. Islands in the South Pacific have Kava Kava Bars which serve this delicious and relaxing beverage to locals all day long. It has a very long history and can be recorded as far back as 10 centuries.

If you look up Kava in Wikipedia you will find it is referred to as "Kava - Piper methysticum" The Latin for pepper is "piper" and the Greek for intoxicating is "methysticum". So essentially the meaning of Kava is "intoxicating pepper"! it is actually a tranquilizer so should be used with caution.

With the rise in popularity of drinking Kava tea in the US, we have seen more Kava bars springing up all over the place. There are many benefits of drinking this intoxicating tea and it is very good for people who suffer from stress, nerves and depression. But like most things that are good for you, too much is not a good idea, and if you are on any kind of medication, you should consult with a doctor before drinking any. It is possible that this herb can react badly with prescribed medication.

There is also debate regarding whether it can be called a tea as traditionally tea is made from hot water poured over the leaves of a plant to extract an infusion. This not the way Kava tea is made, the leaves of the plant are poisonous, so these are not used, the tea comes from the root, and it is not made with boiling water either.

In the Tanna Vanatu jungles of the South Pacific where this tea originates from many people are Muslim and they drink it all the time, they have also become used to the effects of it. It is best taken at night, and after a long hard day in the office, sipping a cup of this tea will relax your mind and body. It has a soothing, calming affect, just don't overdo it! One of the guys on "Survivor 9" overdid it and he had to be carried back to his hut by the women of the tribe.

The active ingredients in this tea are called "kavalactones". These are extracted from the root of the plant mechanically by squeezing the infused Kava pulp through a fabric or other type of straining method. The liquid which is produced by this means is the actual tea, and although this is not the traditional method for making any other tea, Kava is still described as being an herbal tea.

Kavalactones are both chemical and temperature sensitive, so Kava should not be subjected to the temperatures of boiling water. If these active ingredients are destroyed, then there is no point to actually drinking this tea, and you will have wasted your money.

Today you are able to purchase Kava products in tea bags, but these are often not the genuine product, it is mixed with other herbs such as Chamomile, St. John's Wort and Valerian Root, which are also renowned for their calming effects. If you want to experience the real deal, you have to drink Kava tea the same way has it has been drunk for thousands of years. Forget the tea bags and get a good recipe to make this tea, then buy the genuine product.
