Improving Recovery After Liposuction

Once you've made the decision to have the procedure done, you should start thinking seriously about making sure you will have the best possible recovery after liposuction. Much of your recovery process will depend on the way that the procedure is done and the skill of the surgeon, so you should be careful to choose an experienced surgeon.

Many of the things that you need to do to improve your recovery after liposuction are similar to the things that any patient having surgery should do. Take extra care to eat a healthy diet and be active in the weeks leading up to your surgery so that your body is ready to absorb the stress of surgery and has the tools available to perform the work of healing.

How long you have to remain in the hospital will depend on whether your procedure requires general anesthesia or only local anesthesia, but either way you should be sure to get up and move around on a regular basis beginning as soon as your surgeon says that it is safe. It's very tempting to lie still when you're feeling so sore, but people who move around both recover faster and are less prone to develop dangerous blood clots.

There are also some things that you should do which are specific to this procedure. Liposuction generally involves both reducing fat to a fluid that can be drawn out of the body and adding additional fluids to aid in the process.

A large part of recovery from liposuction centers on draining those fluids from the area. Only when this happens does the swelling go down so that you can see the results of the surgery. This process can often be helped by wearing basic compression garments to help fluid move out of the area and to prevent additional fluids from pooling during the healing process.

Liposuction is generally a very safe and straightforward procedure, but you still need to take active steps to aid your body in recovery from liposuction if you want to ensure that you have the best possible results. Before you go in for your procedure, you should be sure to ask your surgeon to explain what you will need to do to maximize recovery based on the specific techniques that he intends to use.
