Who Collects Bobbleheads Anyway?
I never really understood the reason why people would collect bobbleheads.
They've always seemed a bit silly to me but yet throughout time they have always remained popular.
Having never owned one, nor having the desire to purchase one I was curious to understand who these people are and why they would collect them.
Thus leading me to the realization that bobblehead collectors come in many different shapes and sizes and they collect them for a variety of different reasons.
I have narrowed them down to three basic categories.
The first type of bobblehead collector you have are the Sports Enthusiasts.
They are the ones who are crazy for one particular sports team, most likely baseball or football, and feel the need to collect the top players.
Lucky for them a lot of teams give them away for free at the games.
If you collect a set from a particular year and that year the team goes all the way to the World Series or the Super Bowl, then down the road you could likely collect a bit of money for them.
I recently saw a set of 4 original Minnesota Twins bobbleheads from 2000 sell on eBay for $405! Not too shabby! The second type of bobblehead collector is the Pop Culture Crowd.
This group is made up of people who love memorabilia from their past or present cultural influences.
Remember Huckleberry Hound, Grape Ape, and Hong Kong Phooey? Brings back memories right? They go for the classic Superman and Wonder Woman bobbleheads which are still popular today! I personally feel if I was going to own a bobblehead it would be Wonder Woman just because I feel we're a lot alike! I recently saw on eBay a complete bobblehead set of The Beatles that was sold for $610! Not too shabby! This same group of people also collects bobbleheads of current cultural influences from television, movies and politics.
The Television show The Office for example has the strange character Dwight Schrute.
That particular bobblehead was introduced on the show and NBC produced a limited supply of them for sale to the public.
They are so popular it's impossible to find one! Third and last there are the Star Wars geeks and the Trekkies.
These people are fanatics about these movies and will collect anything and everything related to them.
They are in a category by themselves because they are just so obsessed.
You know who I'm talking about.
These are the people who go to those huge conventions and dress up like Chewbaka and Princess Leia.
They are crazy! But hey, who am I to judge? This is much more than just a pop culture thing it is a true obsession which is why they get their own category.
Since doing my research I have changed my opinion about bobbleheads.
I have decided that bobbleheads are yes, still silly but also funny.
They just sit there and nod their heads and make me smile.
That to me is a good enough reason to collect them.
So it doesn't matter which category you fall into, you've got your hands on something fun.
A conversation starter, a bit of nostalgia, an investment even.
And hey, who knows they may even make you smile.
Not a bad way to start the day!
