How to Install a Heating Element on Older Model GE Dryers

    • 1). Unplug the electrical cord of the older model GE dryer from the power supply before replacing the heating element. Pull the dryer out away from the wall so you can work behind the appliance.

    • 2). Unfasten the back panel of the dryer, using a nut driver to remove the screws. Move the panel out of the way, setting the screws in a safe place.

    • 3). Move the idler arm forward by hand to relieve the tension on the belt, taking the belt off the idler arm and motor pulleys as well as from around the drum. Detach the metal plate on the back of the dryer that sits behind the drum, using a nut driver to unfasten the screws.

    • 4). Remove the E-clip from the back of the drum shaft, prying it off with a screwdriver, and take the three washers off the drum shaft, setting them in a safe place. Unfasten the Torx screws from inside the dryer door underneath the top lid with a Torx screwdriver.

    • 5). Flip the top lid back so it is resting on the rear hinges. Remove the screws on the inside of the front panel near the top with a nut driver.

    • 6). Lift the front panel off the metal clips on the bottom of the dryer cabinet. Unplug the door switch connector on the back of the front panel by hand, setting the panel out of the way.

    • 7). Remove the dryer drum, lifting it up from the bottom and taking it out of the dryer cabinet. Unplug the electrical wiring connector from the heating element by hand.

    • 8). Unfasten the screws that hold the heating element to the panel behind the drum with a nut driver, removing the heating element from the dryer. Attach the new heating element to the panel with screws.

    • 9). Plug the electrical wiring connector into the heating element by hand. Slide the dryer drum back onto the slot on the back panel, placing the belt around the drum as well as over the idler arm pulley and around the motor pulley.

      Move the idler arm back into position to add tension to the belt. Plug the door switch connector into the back of the front panel by hand.

      Slide the front panel over the metal clips on the bottom of the dryer cabinet, securing the top of the panel with screws. Flip the top lid back over the dryer cabinet, securing it with Torx screws underneath the front of the top lid.

      Place the three washers over the drum shaft in the back of the dryer, securing them with the E-clip. Attach the metal plate on the back of the dryer with screws,

      Secure the back panel to the dryer with screws. Slide the older model GE dryer against the wall and plug it into the electrical outlet.
