What Are the ITT Colleges?

    History

    • In 1966 ITT Corporation bought out Howard W. Sams and Company, a textbook and training manual publisher that ran three existing technical colleges. In 1968 ITT Corporation incorporated a separate ITT Educational Services subsidiary. ITT Educational Services ran the schools, now re-branded the ITT Technical Institutes, for ITT Corporation until 1999, when new owners of the parent corporation sold all of ITT Educational Services' stock, making it a completely independent company.

    Schools

    • ITT Technical Institute offers multiple degrees under six primary schools: the School of Information Technology, the School of Drafting and Design, the School of Criminal Justice, the School of Electronics Technology, the School of Business and the School of Health Sciences. Although multiple schools run concurrently at each ITT campus, not every campus has classes in each school. According to ITT's website, its teaching style mixes academic learning with a large portion of practical lab work.

    Controversy

    • ITT Technical Institute found itself under scrutiny, along with other trade schools, in 2010 by the U.S. Department of Education, which is considering a new bill to limit the amount of student debt based on the expected incomes of graduates. As of 2010, a two-year associate's degree at ITT cost around $40,000, a cost that school recruiters claim is easily paid for by the potential career opportunities; but government officials are looking to cut it.

    Statistics

    • The latest U.S. Department of Education data from the 2000-2001 school year shows ITT Technical Institute granting 14.7 percent of the country's associate's and bachelor's degrees in electronics-related programs and 22.6 percent in drafting programs--the highest in the country in each category. In 2009 students in ITT's online classes had a 44 percent graduation rate, placing them 14th among major online schools, according to the Online Education Database.
