Allergen-Free Baby Foods
- The slight sweetness of sweet potatoes is pleasing to little palates, while the nutritional value of this vegetable is a positive for parents. To make sweet potatoes into baby food, thoroughly wash a medium sized potato. Vent the skin four or five times with a fork and bake for 30 minutes (or until soft) at 375 degrees F. Mash the meat of the potato with a fork and serve when cooled.
- Carrots also have a slight sweet taste. Preparation is simple. Avoid baby carrots which are lower in nutrients, opting rather for more mature ones. Trim the tips from each end and slice them into coin-shaped slices. Place them into a pot of vigorously boiling water and remove when soft enough to be broken down by your baby gumming them.
- Thoroughly wash two cups of fresh green beans in cold water. Remove the stems and cut them into 2-inch pieces. Place them in a saucepan with just enough water to cover the bottom and steam for four minutes or until tender. You can then place the beans into your food processor on the puree setting until they have a smooth enough consistency for the baby.
- If your baby is of the age where cereal consumption is permissible, consider cereals made of hominy or quinoa. These corn substitutes are allergen free and can still be very tasty. Corn substitute cereals can be tough to find in traditional supermarkets but are available at specialty and health food stores.
