Opera singers have the remarkable talent of conveying a story through the power of voice, even when the audience doesn't speak the language in which the opera is performed. Clothing and hairstyle choices of an opera singer are also important in conveying who the character is that they are playing. Though the costumes and hairstyles are largely dependent on the time period in which the opera is set, there are several hairstyles that can help keep the singers' faces visible. - Wearing your hair in an up-do is the best way to keep it out of the faces of opera singers, so the audience can see the full range of facial expressions. The possibilities for up-do hairstyles are virtually unlimited. They range from simple to more complex. One of the simplest up-do options is to pull your hair back into a bun. You can wear a bun high on your head or lower toward your neck. Hair can be slicked straight back or parted down the middle or the side. A braided bun adds an extra dimension of complexity to your bun. French twists and messy up-dos that are fastened with bobby pins are also easy to do and create a beautiful, romantic look. Accessorize your hair with a tiara, jeweled hairpins or a bold flower.
- If you prefer not to pull your hair up entirely, you can still keep hair out of your face with a simple half-up hairstyle. You will need a hair clip or bobby pins to hold your hair in place. Divide your hair in half, pulling the section above the ears and top of the head back into a smooth ponytail and secure into place with clips or pins. If you prefer, you can braid the top half of hair and secure it with an elastic band at the bottom of the braid. An elegant variation of the half-up hairstyle is to gather a small section of hair on either side of the head, twist or braid the sections around to the back of the head and secure into place with an elastic hairband, hair clips or pins.
- It is possible to wear your hair completely down and still keep your hair away from your face. The first option is to slick your hair back slightly by applying mousse to damp hair and brushing away from the face. When hair dries, spray with hairspray to secure the hairstyle. Another simple alternative is to wear a headband to pull your hair back from your face. The headband can be decorative to coordinate with the theme of the opera or it might blend with your hair color so it is invisible to the audience. If you choose to wear your hair down, consider curling your hair for an extra romantic look.
