How to Appraise a Diamond Ring

    • 1). Hire a professional who is an independent jewelry appraiser and is also accredited. Credentials to look for include national memberships in recognized organizations such as the ASA, ISA and AGS (see Resources). The individual should also be a graduate of the Gemological Institute of America. Asking for professional credentials and affiliations should not be a problem for those who are reputable.

    • 2). Never hire an appraiser that makes an offer to buy, trade or charge a fee based on the value of the jewelry piece. Those who have nothing to gain from the value of the piece will be more likely provide you with an honest appraisal.

    • 3). Refer to the organizations that the appraiser belongs, to be sure the credentials are accurate and up to date. Online searches are easily done (see Resources). If you have not chosen an individual to appraise your jewelry, one can be located at the sites by entering your search criteria (location).

    • 4). Avoid appraisals that are offered by the store or retailer where you have purchased the piece, as it has much to gain by boasting an inflated appraisal. A reputable store will allow you to either bring in an independent appraiser or to purchase the item with an offer to return the item (giving you time to have it appraised).

    • 5). Examine the appraisal to sure it includes a minimum of three pages listing the item (or items), a detailed description, photographs of the piece, the value with explanation and the appraiser's signature with credentials.
