Temperature for Plumerias to Bloom
- Obtain plumeria from your local nursery or garden center in the form of cuttings or larger plants. When grown from cuttings, it takes plumeria between 2 and 4 years to mature to the point where it stands and opens blossoms. Even though nursery-purchased cuttings are often sold with opened blossoms, realize that these cuttings were taken from a mature plumeria. Once the cuttings are planted in your garden or home landscape, they forgo blossoming for several years while they work to form a strong, extensive root system.
- Plumeria requires a frost-free climate for successful outdoor cultivation, according to Floridata. The United States Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 9 through 11 provide temperatures suitable for growing plumeria trees and shrubs in gardens or home landscapes. Outside of these zones, plumeria grow in large planting containers and moved indoors whenever the temperature is forecast to drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
- Plumeria also make excellent container plants for indoor cultivation. When growing a potted plumeria indoors, position it where it receives plenty of direct sunlight to stimulate blooming; look for a south- or west-facing window that gets direct sun for at least six hours per day. Program your home thermostat to provide daytime temperatures that are between 70 and 75 degrees and nighttime temperatures that are five to 10 degrees cooler.
- Although plumeria requires little special care to grow and bloom successfully, there are a few things that you to encourage the production of abundant blossoms. Water your plumeria tree or shrub at least once a week to keep the soil consistently moist. Note that container-grown plumeria may require more frequent irrigation. Fertilize plumeria monthly with a half-strength solution of a high-phosphorus, "bloom booster" fertilizer, applied according to package instructions, to help plumeria set and open healthy blossoms.
