How to Repair a Norton Igniter

    • 1). Locate the igniter in the appliance. In stoves, the igniter is usually found below the main oven's base. The removal of the oven base and burner bar, or gas heater's outer door, is usually necessary to reach the igniter.

    • 2). Look at the igniter's two wires that attach via ceramic wire nuts or a plastic plug to the appliance's two wires. If the ceramic nuts have cracked, the wires may be loose. Remove the cracked ceramic nuts by twisting them counterclockwise.

    • 3). Twist one new ceramic nut clockwise onto the end of one of the wires coming from the igniter, and the end of one of the appliance's wires. Note that either of the igniter's wires may attach to either of the appliance's wires. Repeat the process with the igniter's second wire, and the appliance's second wire. If the plastic plug-in has come loose, plug it back in place by hand.

    • 4). Turn on the appliance. If the igniter merely glows a small orange/red flame, or if there's a gas odor, the igniter must be replaced. Or, if the igniter takes more than two minutes to ignite after switching on the appliance, even if the flame is an inch or more in height, it must be replaced.

    • 5). Turn off the gas and power supply to the appliance. Unscrew the two ceramic nuts that attach the igniter wires to the appliance wires, or pull out the plastic plug-in on the end of the wires.

    • 6). Loosen and remove the screws holding the igniter's metal cover to the appliance using a screwdriver. Take out the igniter and discard it. Put the new Norton igniter in place and tighten the igniter's screws to hold it in place.

    • 7). Hold one of the wire ends coming from the igniter to one of the wire ends coming from the appliance. Twist the wire ends together and screw on a ceramic wire nut. Attach the other igniter and appliance wire in the same way. Alternatively, push the igniter's plug-in into the appliance's socket.

    • 8). Reinstall the gas burner and oven base, or any cover that was removed to access the old igniter. Turn on the appliance's power and gas supply.
