The selection of your gardens location is a very important part in having a successful garden, especially if you are incorporating intensive gardening practices.
This can be a challenge if you are limited on space or are gardening in an urban setting.
Urban setting can have more of a challenge when it comes to finding a location that will provide the required amount of sunlight.
To have a successful vegetable garden, you will need a minimum of 6 hours of sunlight, preferably morning.
Commercial buildings, houses and even garages built close together, along with trees in an urban environment can at time make this an almost impossible task.
Turning to different methods, other than the traditional row method of gardening, may be the only choice you have.
Container planting, raised beds, mini-gardens or even window boxes are choices that can very productive and easier to fit in a location that is limited on space.
Inter-planting among your existing landscape, also known as edible landscaping, is another alternative as long as the needs of the plants you are growing are met.
The preparation of your garden will vary, depending on what method you choose.
Planning it all out on paper is the best way.
Make a list of the crops you are going to plant with there needs, like area needed to grow, nutrients needed, plant spacing, water requirements and soil conditions.
Planting in any type of container and preparing a soilless potting mix designed specifically for the crops you are growing is the ideal situation, ideal situations aren't always possible as we all know.
With intensive gardening, you will most likely be including companion planting into your garden.
This is a method that is also going to need some thought when planning your garden out on paper.
When creating a list of the plants you are growing, match them with the plants that will best benefit each other.
