    • 1). Mix in a bucket 75 percent peat moss and 25 percent sand. Fill the new container up to 1/2 an inch from the top with the potting medium.

    • 2). Prune off with bypass shears any lower fronds that are showing signs of damage or discoloration.

    • 3). Place the fern on its side and pull off the old container while holding onto the fronds. Create a space inside the new container for the root ball of the fern. Place the fern inside of the hole and pack soil around its base. Make sure the fern is planted at the same depth as it was planted in its original container.

    • 4). Hold the fern over the sink and pour bottled water at the base until it flows from the draining holes. Bottled water reduces the salt buildup in the soil. Place the fern's container on a saucer that has a 1-inch layer of pea gravel at the bottom.

    • 5). Set your fern next to a window that has a sheer curtain protecting the fern from direct sunlight.
