    • 1). Spread out the plastic sheet, preferably in a sunny location near the pond.

    • 2). Start working from the edges of the pond. Cut the grasses and weeds growing around the side. Pull up any you don't wish to grow back and put them on the sheet.

    • 3). Wade into the pond and pull up about one third of the rooted plants to thin them out. Put the weeds into your bucket as you go.

    • 4). Cut back established plants to a manageable size with the garden scissors. Use long handled pruning shears for the hard-to-reach plants.

    • 5). Rake up excess floating plants such as water lilies.

    • 6). Empty the bucket onto the sheet to let these weeds dry out. Then put the weeds on your compost heap.

    • 7). Use a fine-meshed net to remove duckweed and algae. You can empty the bucket of these straight onto the compost heap, as they won't survive out of water.
