Puppies gotta chew and getting your puppy to stop chewing can be quite a challenge.
Consider this though would you like to pay $1000 of dollars fixing just the damage that one puppy can cause or would you like to train him properly? Training can take time and worst of all patience but it must be done in order to get puppy to stop chewing.
Like I said puppies gotta chew but the good news is you're the boss! You decided what is right for your puppy to chew on and what you puppy absolutely can not chew on.
First start by getting 6 toys.
I like to use a wide range of different toys such as several different types of nylon bones.
Get some with nubs, some that are softer, some that are harder, or some that are in odd shapes.
Get some tough squishy toys I personally like the "Fire House" brand of toys but you can get what ever your dog enjoys chewing on.
The more verity the more likely you'll get your puppy to stop chewing on your house.
Now keep in mind that toys with plastic parts such as eyes and squeakers can be dangerous so make sure you are watching your puppy when he/she is chewing on these types of toys.
Actually you should be keeping at least one eye on your puppy at all times to make sure he/she isn't chewing on the 18th century dinning room table.
If you can't watch him/her all the time don't worry I'll explain what you can do.
Now, you've got your 6 toys.
Give 3 toys to your puppy and play with him/her with them for a few minutes.
Tuck the other 3 away in a safe place.
After playing for a few minutes get up and ignore your puppy.
This is about the time he/she will start to sniff around to find a good place to start chewing or worse yet go to the bathroom.
If you know he/she doesn't have to go to the bathroom wait until he/she finds something good to chew on.
Just when he/she is about to wrap his/her lips around a delicious looking couch cushion firmly say "No".
Never use an angry tone.
An angry tone will get your puppy more excited and you'll never get puppy to stop chewing.
Once he/she turns around to look at you redirect them by giving them a toy to chew on.
This shows your puppy what he/she can chew on and makes a clear statement about what not to chew on.
Once puppy starts to play with the toy on his/her own you then may reward with a pet or some play time.
You must repeat this often to get your puppy to stop chewing.
Every day take one toy and put it away and bring out a new one.
This will help keep your puppies interest and help him/her to stop chewing up everything! If you can't be watching your puppy all the time here are some suggestions.
Gate your puppy in a room with you after puppy proofing the room.
For example if you are cooking dinner you can gate your puppy in the kitchen so you can keep a close eye on him/her while doing other things.
You can also crate your puppy for short periods of time.
This is definitely something you want them to get used to before sticking them in a crate for long periods of time so use it sparingly.
Leash your puppy to you.
This teaches the puppy that you are the boss and gets your puppy to stop chewing up things and pay attention to what you are doing.
If worst comes to worst you can always buy a no chew spray from the store.
Be careful with these products though because spraying them in the air can give you a bad taste in your mouth and nose for hours but it will get puppy to stop chewing on a few things.
Getting your puppy to stop chewing is one of the first steps you should be taking to training your puppy to be a grate dog!
