How to Shape a Guava Tree
- 1). Choose four lateral branches to grow on each tree. Let these branches grow during the first growing season until they reach three feet in length.
- 2). Cut back these lateral branches to the first intersection where a smaller branch or bud grows. This pruning practice -- tipping -- controls the size and shape of the guava tree.
- 3). Allow the new shoots that form from the pruning points to grow until they reach three feet in length. Tip the newest lateral branches using the same trimming technique. This completes the first growing season pruning and shaping.
- 4). Check the guava tree for winter damage at the beginning of each growing season. Remove any dead or damaged branches by cutting them off at the point where they connect with the next largest branch. Remove any branches that cross or rub on each other.
- 5). Tip back the guava tree to shape it and control growth. Allow the branches to grow out to the size you desire for the overall size of the canopy and then prune them back to the nearest lateral branch.
