How to Fertilize Daylillies

    • 1). Amend your soil. Improve your soil by adding rich garden soil or compost.

    • 2). Determine your climate and soil. If you do not know the pH balance of your soil, your local Department of Natural Resources, Extension Service, or a local garden center can direct you to a place to have it analyzed. Once you know what your soil's pH balance is, you can choose which kind of fertilizer to use.

    • 3). Purchase the fertilizer. You can choose either a natural or chemical fertilizer to use. Natural fertilizers include things like animal manure, coffee grounds, and seaweed. If you use a chemical fertilizer you should purchase something fairly balanced such as a 10-10-10 or a 13-13-13.

    • 4). Apply the fertilizer. Depending on which type you purchased, follow directions to apply. Some should be mixed in with the soil around the daylilies, some inserted into the ground, and others should be sprayed onto the plant directly.

    • 5). Put down mulch. Adding mulch around your daylilies helps to keep the soil from drying out, protects the plant's roots, and keeps the nutrients your plants need from washing away. It also helps control weeds and provides an attractive background to showcase your daylilies. Olalillie Daylily Gardens web site recommends using mulch materials such as:hay, wood chips, peat moss, grass clippings, tree bark, and raked leaves.
