Work Status

• Applicants for unemployment benefits who are unemployed through no fault of their own must actively seek work. Applicants are ineligible for benefits if they resigned from their job or were fired for cause. If applicants are temporarily laid off or furloughed, they must actively seek temporary employment. Full-time workers must seek another full-time position. Applicants laid off from a part-time job are eligible for benefits, but must seek part-time or full-time employment. Applicants who are temporarily laid off and belong to a union that prohibits outside work are exempt from actively seeking work. Striking workers are not eligible for unemployment benefits.
  
  

School Status

• High school students are not eligible for unemployment benefits in Minnesota. College students are eligible if they are actively seeking work and are willing to drop a class if it conflicts with the new employer's work schedule.
