Dogs are often referred to as "man's best friend" because of their genial and friendly behavior. Dogs are frequently purchased to be the family pet, which requires them to be energetic. However, there are instances where dog owners do not want their dogs to be athletic and full of energy. Invalids, or people who are not able to venture outside of their home because of a health condition, often relish the company that a dog can provide, but cannot care for a high-strung, energetic dog. Certain breeds are better than others for such a situation. - The miniature pinscher is an excellent choice as a companion for an invalid. Miniature pinschers adapt well to small spaces such as an apartment or small home. This breed is loyal to its master and is smart and inquisitive. With proper training, perhaps from an outside party, this breed can be taught all of the basic commands ("sit," "down," "stay," "come" and "heel"). The breed generally grows to be 10 to 12 inches tall and weighs between 8 and 10 pounds. Miniature pinschers can live as long as 15 years.
- The Pomeranian is an ideal companion for invalids. This breed is beloved for its lovable and affectionate nature. The breed is lively, but indoor play should take care of most of its exercise needs. Pomeranians can be stubborn, but this trait can be stopped early in life with firm yet caring training. The breed has a long coat that should be brushed regularly. Pomeranians generally grow to be 7 to 12 inches tall and weigh between 3 and 7 pounds. (See References 3)
- The pug is a dog breed that is well suited to life with a human that is home bound. Pugs do not require much exercise; indoor play will generally meet their requirement for movement. This dog does not come without its negatives, however. The breed suffers from breathing problems due to its short muzzle. Care should be taken if the dog is seen or heard wheezing from over-exertion. This breed is very happy and pugs love to be around their owners. The breed generally grows to be 12 to 14 inches tall and weighs between 13 and 20 pounds.
