The bedroom is more than just a sleeping chamber, it is an escape from the world and all of your worries. A bedroom is your own personal retreat where you can go to rest and prepare yourself for all of your other activities and responsibilities in life. Your bedroom decor should create a tranquil setting in which you can find pure peace to help you unwind and relax no matter how hectic life is outside your bedroom door.

    Colors

    • Choose a soothing color palette. Keep it tranquil by using fewer colors with low contrast. A tranquility bedroom is an excellent place to make use of a monochromatic color scheme, such as white on white. If using color, choose values that are neither too dark nor too bright. Instead pick mid-tone shades that are not intense. Avoid color schemes with a lot of contrast. Instead of green and red, which is high contrast because the colors are opposites on the color wheel, choose colors that are next to each other on the color wheel, such as green and blue or blue and violet. Blue and green are known to produce a calming effect on the brain and are better choices than stimulating colors like red and yellow. Aoid high-gloss paint finishes and look for eggshell or satin to keep the glare down.

    Pattern and Texture

    • In a tranquility bedroom, you can avoid pattern altogether and not miss it. If you do use patterns, use them sparingly and ensure they are subtle and low contrast. You can get away with some light gray thin pinstripes on a white curtain or tiny pastel pink rosebuds on an accent pillow, but the more bold the pattern, the more busy the look. Likewise, choose textures that are soft and smooth to bring a feeling of warmth and comfort. A velvet cushion, a satin bedspread or solid sheer panels create a more tranquil feel than ruffled layers of lace, fringe or tassels.

    Furniture

    • In the case of creating a tranquil bedroom, less is more. It's better to have one large, single, striking piece against a wall than three of different dimensions and styles. Look for furnishings with clean lines. Stay away from ornate carvings, painted embellishments or brass trim. Avoid furniture with a lot of open storage, such as bookcase headboards or curio cabinets. Furniture made of natural wood is particularly fitting in a tranquility room. Above all, furniture should have a fresh, clean look. If your old furniture is looking a little shabby, it's time for a paint job.

    Accessories

    • The key to tranquility in bedroom decor is to minimize, so get rid of the clutter. Clutter is visually busy, making it more difficult to relax around it. Wipe your dresser top clean of knickknacks, and place a potted orchid or ceramic vase flanked on each side with a white pillar candle. Set a single lamp on the nightstand, and perhaps a put a plant in a corner to bring a bit of nature into the room. If you love water and find babbling brooks and ocean waves relaxing, get a small tabletop fountain as a water feature in your bedroom so the sounds of the running water can lull you into a state of relaxation.
