How to Design Your Own Room Colors
- 1). Choose a piece of furniture or pattern to start from. In bedrooms you can start by picking out a comforter with colors you like, or pick a painting, furniture or curtains.
- 2). Grab some paint samples at your local hardware store to use as a reference point. Usually hardware stores offer free swatches with four or five color samples on each that are in the same color scheme, ranging from light to dark.
- 3). Match the color samples to your starting pattern to find a swatch that gives you the most accurate reference sample. Take this swatch with you to the paint store.
- 4). Select a light shade of the sample color you like to use as a wall color for your room. Typically with walls, lighter is better because dark colors can be overwhelming or enclosing if not used properly.
- 5). Select a medium shade of your sample color to use for décor like couches, chairs and curtains in the room. For example, if you paint your walls a light beige, your medium color may be a light brown to correspond with the beige.
- 6). For accents in your room such as throw pillows or paintings, try a darker shade that matches the scheme on your swatch. Darker colors are great for accents because they don't overwhelm the eye, but will give your room a little pop. For example, say you have beige walls and light brown furniture; your third color may be a rich dark brown or even black.
