Bathroom Cleaning Chemicals
- Common and inexpensive, many items found in kitchen pantries that will keep your bathroom sparkling clean without polluting your home with harsh and possibly toxic chemicals.
White vinegar will kill fungus -- such as mold and mildew -- from your sinks, bathtubs and showers. Pour 2 to 3 cups of undiluted white vinegar into a spray bottle. Liberally spray the vinegar on the fungus and wipe with a damp cloth. Saturate the area with the vinegar once again but this time let the vinegar air-dry on the surface.
Baking soda will naturally deodorize, clean and eliminate fungus from your bathroom. Dampen a sponge in water and sprinkle baking soda liberally over it. Scrub shower doors, sinks, tiles and tubs clean with the sponge. The baking soda will cut through soap scum while killing any lingering mold or mildew. Rinse the baking soda off with cool water or wipe it off with a clean cloth dampened in water. - Cleaning your bathroom with chemicals will give it a deep down clean; however, these chemicals can be dangerous and you must use them with cautions.
A laundry booster and disinfectant, chlorine bleach will kill fungus and clean even the toughest bathroom bathrooms. Dilute 1 cup of bleach in 1 gallon of water and wash bathroom walls, floors, sinks and tub with a sponge saturated in the mixture. To whiten grout, scrub with a scrub brush saturated in equal parts bleach and water and wipe clean with a damp cloth.
Commonly found in many commercial cleaners, ammonia is an all-purpose cleaner that will keep your bathroom sparkling clean. Unfortunately, ammonia creates pungent fumes and you must vent the area when cleaning with it. Furthermore, never mix ammonia with bleach or products that contain bleach. Doing so will result in possibly dangerous fumes.
Trisodium phosphate -- also known as TSP -- is a heavy-duty, all-purpose cleaner available at home improvement centers. Keep your bathroom drains clean, deodorized and fungus-free by pouring 1/4 cup of baking soda, followed by 1/2 cup of white vinegar down the drain. Place the cover on the drain and let sit for 15 minutes before pouring 2 qt. of boiling water down the drain.
Make your bathroom chrome fixtures shine by dissolving 1/4 cup of baking soda in a mixture of 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/2 gallon of warm water. Scrub the chrome with a sponge saturated in the mixture and rinse clean with cool water. Wipe dry with a towel to prevent water spots from forming. - When working with chemicals of any kind, wear rubber gloves to prevent skin irritation and open doors and windows to provide adequate air circulation.
Some cleaning solutions can harm certain items. When in doubt, always test the cleaning method on an inconspicuous area. If damage or discoloration occurs, discontinue use. Furthermore, never mix chemicals -- such as bleach and ammonia -- together.
