      Hopkins is located about 10 minutes west of Minneapolis. The suburban area is home to about 18,000 people and is about four-square miles in size. The city sits near U.S. 169 and Interstate 394 and has a state trail running through the downtown area. The city offers several outdoor activities and classes for senior citizens during the summer months each year, many of which make use of the many local area trails.

    Biking

    • Hopkins-Minnetonka Recreation Services hosts a biking club for seniors. The group meets every Tuesday and Thursday from April through October and departs at about 9:15 a.m., weather permitting. The group meets at the Hopkins Depot downtown and is lead by Dennis Anderson.

    Canoe Trips

    • Hopkins-Minnetonka Recreation Services hosts three canoe trips during the summer months. The trips are taken on Christmas Lake and Minnehaha Creek, and each canoe can seat two people. Seniors are encouraged to bring picnic lunches to eat at the park after trips. The trips are designed for people with canoe experience.

    Hiking

    • Summer Hikes through Minnetonka features several hikes through the Hopkins-Minnetonka area, and also is sponsored by Hopkins-Minnetonka Recreation Services. The program features five free, two-mile hikes throughout the summer months. Days and dates of the hikes vary, but each hike begins at about 9 a.m. Locations also will vary, and meeting places include Grays Bay Dam, Big Willow Park, Jidana Park, Meadow Oak Park, and Shady Oak Lane.

    Summer Softball Leagues

    • Hopkins-Minnetonka Senior Services offers two summer softball leagues. The first is the West Metro Senior Softball league, which began in 1992. The four-month program is designed for players 55 and older and meets twice a week on Tuesday and Thursday.

      Hopkins-Minnetonka Senior Services also offers a league for those older than 70. The slow-pitch league meets Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Big Willow Park. There is a registration fee and participants can join at any time throughout the season, which runs form late April through October.
