    • 1). Remove the DVD or CD currently in the drive. Inspect the bottom of the disk. Any skips or errors may be due to the disk and not the drive. Put in a different disk to see if the problems occur with it.

    • 2). Open the DVD-ROM drive and spray a few shots of compressed air into it. The compressed air removes any dust or debris floating around the drive, causing it to skip or misread disks.

    • 3). Insert the CD/DVD cleaning disk into the drive and allow it to run for a few minutes. The disk removes debris stuck to the laser or lens of the DVD-ROM.

    • 4). Place a new DVD or CD into the DVD-ROM drive and see if it plays correctly. If your computer isn't recognizing the DVD-ROM at all, you need to reinstall the drivers.

    • 5). Insert the driver installation disk into the computer if you installed the drive after you purchased the computer. Follow the prompts of the installation wizard to complete the driver setup. If the DVD-ROM came preinstalled, you need to launch your Internet browser and make your way to the computer's manufacturer site. Select "Support and Downloads" and select your model computer. Download the provided DVD-ROM driver. After it is installed, the computer recognizes your DVD drive and it can now perform correctly.
