How to Repair Stripped Out Bolts on a Banjo Neck

    • 1). Loosen the acorn nut that holds the top bolt onto the rim of the banjo. Use an open-ended wrench to loosen and remove the acorn nut.

    • 2). Remove the nut that secures the tailpiece bracket onto the end of the rim rod. Again, use an open-ended wrench to remove the nut.

    • 3). Unscrew the nut that secures the rim rod to the interior of the rims lower bout. Turn the nut as far as you can on the threads shaft. Use the open-ended wrench to loosen the nut and then turn it with your fingers.

    • 4). Pull the neck as far off the banjo rim as you can and thread the nut off the rim rod. With the nut removed from the rim rod, pull the neck completely off the banjo.

    • 5). Grip the top-threaded post with pliers and turn it counterclockwise to remove it from the banjo neck.

    • 6). Grip the rim rod post with pliers and turn it counterclockwise to remove it from the banjo neck.

    • 7). Drill out the holes with a one half-inch drill bit. Drill approximately two-inches deep.

    • 8). Apply wood glue to two pieces of wooden dowel pins, one half-inch in diameter. Press the dowel pins into the holes.

    • 9). Cut the excess portion of the dowel pins flush with a flat saw. Sand them flat with 600-grit sandpaper.

      Place the neck back onto the banjo. Mark the two holes in the rim onto the end of the neck with a marker.

      Drill a hole at each marked location that measures half the diameter of the threaded bolts.

      Place the banjo neck back onto the banjo. Thread the shorter bolt into the top hole. Thread the acorn nut onto the end of the threaded post and tighten it with the wrench.

      Thread the hex-nut onto the end of the ram rod and then turn it as far as you can go. Slide the rim rod through the hole in the bout of the banjo rim and thread the end of the rod into the hole.

      Tighten the hex-but against the interior side of the rim and thread the last nut onto the rod as it protrudes through the tailpiece hole
