How to Grow Orchids in a Basket

    • 1). Choose an epiphyte orchid. These varieties are contained in bark or moss in the planting center. Terrestrial orchids, which are usually planted in soil, do not grow well in baskets.

    • 2). Pot the orchid in late spring or early summer, once the blooming period is over. Fill the hanging basket with an orchid planting soil or a quick draining mix such as sphagnum peat, perlite or fir bark. Handle the roots with care.

    • 3). Secure the orchid to the hanging basket if it is one that moves or falls. Use green florist wire and keep it in place until the roots are established.

    • 4). Put the basket near a bright window, out of the direct sunlight. Choose an east- or south-facing window. Orchids can also benefit from artificial lighting. Use two- or four-tube lighting fixtures, hanging up to 1 foot above the plant. Keep them on for 12 to 16 hours a day. Reduce the intensity if the plant feels hot to the touch. Make sure the spot gets good air circulation, because epiphytes need it for healthy growth.

    • 5). Water the orchid once every five to 10 days. Orchids are susceptible to root rot, so do not overwater it. Touch the soil, and if it feels dry to the touch, add water until moist. Cattleya and dendrobium must be kept evenly moist when growing but can dry out between watering in the dormant season. Vanda can always dry out between watering.

    • 6). Fertilize the orchids with a complete blend. A slow-release fertilizer is best because it continuously feeds the plants. Apply it to the soil around the orchid once a week during its growth period. Use less than half the amount recommended for general plants, because orchids can grow well without much fertilizer. Avoid feeding in the winter months. Water the orchid heavily when you feed to help the nutrients get to the roots.
